This time, the dish of plants was placed on a slate tile in front of a different window.  On this property there are many lines made up of large boulders, as is common in New England, where glaciers left the land littered as the glaciers retreated.  In order for the farmers to make meadows for their livestock and fields for crops, it was important to roll these stones to make walls to keep the animals contained, and uncluttered ground over which to run a horse-drawn plow.   When I imagine the effort and labor it took for individuals and small groups of workers to carve their farms out of the wilderness, used as is by the indigenous inhabitants, I marvel at their tenacity even as I am saddened by the way the lives and livelihood of the natives was spoiled by the new arrivals..
